A legend is born

on a night to remember, the olympic stadium was buzzing with anticipation of the making of a legend. could the fastest man ever become the double gold medallist in both the 100m and 200m?... of course he could (i never doubted him). although, yohan  'the beast' blake was pretty sharp on his heels.

and not only did we witness the greatest spectacle on earth, but rudisha of kenya also ran probably one of the most amazing 800m finals in the history of the track. remember that all of the finalists ran fast enough to have won the past three olympic 800m finals and were still left trailing in rudisha's wake, incredible.

can bolt go on to triple gold in rio... i really hope so.

The Pixelated Leopard

Having used textured backgrounds in my last piece, the retro bearded man (see last blog post), i thought i would take it on a level and see how i can combine textures.

by overlaying the two textures on top of each other, i have been able to create a gritty and punchy backdrop. This helped contrast against the modern, pixelated style of the leopard... hopefully adding a unique spin to catch the eye!

My plan is to explore more creative backgrounds that i can find in the natural and man made patterns and textures all around us. i'm hopefully going to start to build my very own stock library for future editorial work.

i'm working on my current project, ancient pop, and thought i would look to chuck in some retro to the mix!

building a library of interesting and unique backgrounds, textures and patterns is really useful for those spontaneous moments when you want to liven up an image.

surely that costs?... well actually it doesn't! there are many different websites where you can download free files, i use www.photoshoproadmap.com - you can also download custom brushes there too.

Project 1 - Ancient Pop

As part of my new photography ambitions for 2012 and beyond, i am looking to work through several themed projects.

having visited the ancient cities of rome and the vatican city last autumn, i am contemplating my first project being a fusion of modern pop art and old world beauty. by putting my own bold and stylistic perspective on the mythical and historical legends of the roman empire, i will hopefully produce a really eye catching set of pieces.

so, the challenge...

produce a set of 8 pieces of art that merge the richness of the romans with the style of the pop artists! check out my projects area for the works in progress...

Zeus meets Lichtenstein

ironically this carving of zeus didn't come from the ancient ruins of athens (or modern day athens either !) but from the land of the huns.... budapest.

Anyway, i was intrigued by this sculpture and thought it was worthy of some modernisation. therefore, using my quickly increasing repertoire of photoshop styles, i decided to use some lichtenstein-inspired pop art to bring it up to date!

The Viking Snake - a work in progress...

after an amazing trip to oslo, i have kicked off my post-trip work with this bold image of the snake, that adorned the head of a viking ship. the vikings certainly knew how to create eye catching art and i was drawn to this snake (or is it a dragon?) for its mixture of curves and patterns.

I am using a line drawing technique to make this a bold image. i am now in the process of applying colour.  the finished product will be up on the site soon.
